Hot Dog Cookies

Are these the cutest cookies EVER?!?! Not to toot my own horn. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t invent this recipe. I just stole it =o) But how could I NOT steal it, right?!?!
After I saw this cookie on Raina’s blog The Garden of Yum I knew this was the next cookie I was making. Should I mention I’ve made 8 batches so far. I know! I’m nuts! But when a friend of mine saw them she asked me to make 4 batches for her. They are that cute, I’m telling you! And the perfect summer cookie!
Here’s what you will need:
* 3/4 cup butter
* 1/4 cup sugar
* 1/4 cup brown sugar
* 1 egg yolk
* 1 3/4 cup flour
* 3/4 t. baking powder
* 1/8 t. salt
* red, green and yellow food coloring
* vanilla frosting (I just used the cake frosting from the store)
Cream together the butter, sugar and egg yolk. Slowly add the flour, baking powder and salt and mix well. (You know the drill. Put all the dry indregients into another bowl and mix them first.)
The original recipe said to refrigerate it before you colored the “hot dog” dough but that was too stinkin’ hard. So I took 1/3 of the dough and colored it. You do this by adding 40 drops of red food coloring and 5 drops of green food coloring. I know it seems like a lot but it makes the perfect hot dog color. See?

Now refrigerate the dough for 4 hours.

It’s really easy to shape this cookies. Make the “buns” about 2 or so inches long. I just used my pinky to put an indent down the center.

Make the hot dogs the same size as the buns.

Here’s what they look like on the pan (before cooking!) Don’t put them inthe oven now. You will need to freeze them for about 20 minutes. This step is important. If you don’t, they spread out too much. How do I know this? From experience. (I ate that batch!)

Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes. Time will depend on the size of your cookies.

How cute are these?!?!?

After they have cooled off. Color the frosting red and yellow (for ketcup and mustard).

And there you have it! Hot dogs for dessert! My new favorite cookie!

I have to add that these cookies also taste wonderful. So many cookies I’ve made look great but only taste mediocre. These are awesome. Did I mention I made 8 batches of them. I ate 2 of them (the cookies, not the batches) for breakfast this morning. =o)

Oops, I almost forget to add. This recipe doesn’t make very many cookies (like 14 maybe.) I don’t know about you but that’s not enough. So I doubled it each time.

Enjoy!
