Look What’s Going In The Mail

I love snail mail. I love getting it! I love sending it! I love everything about mail (except all the bills that I get. There’s nothing I like about that!) With all the changing technology it’s so easy to just send a text or an email. I’m guilty of that. But I’ve always been a letter or card sender. I’m not sure where I got it from. No one in my family really sends letters or cards anymore. But my kids and I do. We send holiday cards and we still send traditional thank you cards out. So when I saw this idea I about dropped out of my chair. Brilliant! I shouted! Then I quickly shut up because I didn’t want my kids to see what I was looking at.

How cool would it be to get a filled Easter Egg in the mail? Totally cool, right?!?! And not if you are just a kid. I sent these off to my niece and nephew (who are both in their twenties) and some friends (who are in their forties) and to my kids. Heck, I couldn’t leave them out.

They were easy to do and hardly cost anything. I figure the reaction that will come from opening up the mailbox and finding an egg in there is worth a couple of dollars.

What you will need:
* plastic eggs. Big ones, not the traditional egg sized ones. I bought these at the Dollar Store and they were filled with Pop Rocks. I dumped the Pop Rocks out (and will use those at our Easter Egg Hunt.

* Easter grass. Or you can just shred colored paper.

* Candy. You could go cheap and buy Dollar Store candy but I don’t like the no named chocolate. So I bought Twix, Snickers, Tootsie Rolls, etc. You don’t need very much candy in each egg.

* A little note saying who it’s from.

That’s it!

Fill the eggs. Add an address label and tape shut. Then take them to the Post Office and watch their faces when you drop these on the counter and say “I’d like to mail these please.”

I think each egg was about $3 (with postage).

A huge thank you to Adventures in Creating who made these great Easter treats. And to Givers Log for coming up with this great idea! Brilliant!!!

Of course I had to mail some to my kids! That wouldn’t be right if they missed out on the fun.

They were so cute when they opened up the mailbox. Totally worth the $3, don’t you think???

Now I’m wondering what I can mail next……

  34. Oh I love this idea. Wish I would have seen it before it was too late to try. I hope I won’t forget for next year! My daughter mailed a empty water bottle to one of her friends for her 4th of July birthday. She poked hair bows and candies inside and little “legal” fireworks. It was a fun reaction at the post office too. Thanks for sharing!

  47. That’s great! I am going to do it for my 4 grands, but I wonder if they will all fit in the mailbox!
I agree, no name candy from the $ store, not good!
Did you try the pan with a cake instead of the brownies?

  48. Love this idea! However, here in the South we are having temperatures in the 80s already, so mailing chocolate might not work. Maybe nonedible “goodies”… Thank you!

  49. I hope you don’t mind… I featured this post at Happy Home Fairy today and everyone is LOVING it! I can’t wait to do this myself for our family and friends out of state! Thank you for sharing your creativity!

  50. Ok – i didn’t even take the time to read the other comments before writing mine… but seriously this is AWESOME! My nieces and nephews are going to LOVE this! thank you sooo much for sharing!! YAYY! I am soo excited!! 🙂

  51. LOVE this! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  52. what a great idea…going to the store tomorrow! Another GREAT thing my 2 year old got from her birthday was a HUGE plastic ball in the mail. My sister in law wrote her name and address on the ball and then their name and address for the return address. Took it to the post office and mailed it. It was so funny watching our mail lady tossing the ball around as she came up to the door to deliver it…so so so much fun!

  55. So totally did this day! Thanks so much for the idea! (And as it is warm out I mailed hairbows and other goodies.)

  56. I did this today. The mailman was confused at first, but after I explained that I want them mailed just like this and not in a box he was OK with it.

Hope the nieces and nephews like it! Thanks for the idea.

  57. I did this today! It was so much fun! The look on my postmasters face was priceless! Can’t wait till my family recieves theirs! Thank you!

  58. Thank you so much for this idea! We’ve recently moved far away from our family 🙁 I always did something special for the little cousins in our family….THIS is what I’ll do this year! WOW!

  60. Today I went to mail two eggs to my younger brother, and the mail guy at the counter would not accept them. He said that they will not accept the risk that he eggs will break. He gave me the option to go to the self-service counter to mail them. Given that I was with my (very excited) daughter, I took that option. Now I am hoping they are delivered safely. Am I the only one who had this problem?

  61. Thanks for responding so quickly. Your encouragement makes me feel better. Just the thought of my adult brother having 2 colorful eggs in the mailbox makes me giggle.

  62. I LOVE this idea! It will be awesome when my daughter goes away to college next year and probably won’t be home for Easter! Thanks!

  63. I just went and mailed three of these after seeing them on your site and the postmaster said he couldn’t guarantee they would make it there at all. (What a raincloud he was!) But I went ahead anyway because he also once told me about a shipment that I’d be better off driving my package there myself! LOL. I guess he doesn’t love his job very much. giggle. But I just kept thinking of the excited faces on my niece and nephews when they saw these in the mailbox. I told their mommy to be sure to take them with her to check the mail over the next few days. Mine cost $1.95 each to ship in state.

  64. Just to follow up….all three eggs arrived safely in just two days! My niece and 2 nephews had just returned back from an Easter Egg hunt and got out of the van with their baskets still in hand and checked the mail to find eggs in the mailbox! Perfect Timing!!!!

I wrote encouaging messages and Bible verses on four of those giant (18 in., i think) rubber play balls and am going to mail them this week. Even the mailman gets excited when delivering them!

  66. Okay…one year we mailed coconuts (we live in the tropics) to our family for christmas “cards” – they were heavy..so they were expensive but FUN. and I’ve seen where someone used little cheap-o flip flops and mailed them as “beach party” invites – THATS too cute! I can’t wait to do these next Easter! Thanks for sharing!

  67. We’re doing this through our military support group! I love the idea and can’t wait to begin!

The post lady looks awfully familiar. From the Goodyear office. Maybe I’m wrong.

I’m glad to know we can mail the eggs just that way. Thank you!!

  68. This is a cute idea. Has anyone ever had lost eggs ?

    • Thanks Jennifer. All of the ones I’ve sent have always made it to their destination!

  69. Diane Phillips says:

I mailed out 14 eggs out on Monday March 31, all 14 eggs arrived at their locations by April 2, 2015 . thanks for sharing .
