DIY Dehydrated Strawberries

DIY Dehydrated Strawberries

My daughter absolutely loves the freeze dried strawberries that we buy at Target.  I don’t mind buying them for her because they are pretty healthy but man, oh man, they aren’t cheap.  And, like most Mom’s, I just want my kids to eat something somewhat healthy.

About a year and a half ago I got a food dehydrator for Christmas.  We made batch after batch of Dried Apple Chips (which, surprisingly I haven’t posted).  They are so delicious!  And even more batches of Homemade Beef Jerky.  (Beyond delicious!)  Then came spring and strawberries started appearing in the grocery stores.  Why not, I thought.  So we bought some and dried them and my daughter gobbled them up.  I was pretty excited because they are just strawberries, nothing else.  No preservatives, no chemicals, just fruit.

If you don’t have a food dehydrator I recommend getting one.  They are wonderful!  So easy!  Buy the fruit.

Wash and slice it.  You want it pretty thick or else it’ll shrivel into a tiny piece of fruit.

Turn on your dehydrator and let it do it’s job.  It took about 10 hours on medium to get the texture my daughter wanted (not crunchy but dried out.)

They shrink A LOT!  All of those strawberries made this.

We’re gone for most of the summer but we’re hoping that, when we return, we’re going to stock up on dehydrated fruits for the winter.  We’ve done apples, pears and peaches so far.  They are wonderful.  If you seal them in a food saver, they last for quite awhile!

Happy dehydrating!
