Sand Art. We’ve all seen it. We all love it. But have we ever “made” it? Not this family. So we thought we’d give it a try. There are lots of kits out there at various craft stores. They include a bottle and some sand. But they are around $10 or more and don’t have very much stuff in the box. It’s much cheaper to just buy the things individually. (At least for us it was!)
You can make your own colored sand. It’s really easy. You take “regular” colored sand and put it in a jar or container. Add some food coloring and shake the heck out of it. Pour it onto newspaper or paper towels and let it dry. Pretty easy right?
Or you can go buy it. It’s not very expensive and it’s at most craft stores.
We bought these great bottles from Michaels Crafts. They were $3.99 for 6 bottles. There is a cork on the top and the bottom comes off (so you can put a message in it.) We glued the bottom shut so there wouldn’t be any accidental sand spills all over the house.
Everyone was pretty pleased with their creations!
great idea! I never would have tried this, but you make it look so easy! how neat.
I love it! Never seen those pencil ones before!
What a fun idea! I don’t know if I could deal with the mess though. LOL
No mess for us! We did it in the garage =o)
It was fun and Michaels has tons of sand art “stuff”.
Thanks for stopping by!
Wow!! Adorable and looks like so much fun! Love the pictures of your kids..darling!!
Great kids craft! Thanks for sharing at It’s Party Time Thursday at PonyTails&FishScales!
Awesome idea! Looks like so much fun. My daughter always loved sand art. I wish I had thought to make it at home. They also remind me of when I was a kid terrariums were a big fad. You would layer colored rocks or sand in the bottom of a glass bowl, put soil and then plant some plants in it. I had one that I loved:) You brought back happy memories of my terrarium..lol
Those are just too cute!!!!! I’m going to the beach this weekend and I will have to pick up some sand!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

How fun! I remember we did something like this in school when I was little, but instead of sand we used salt. To color the salt, you spread it out on a washable, flat surface and rub colored sidewalk chalk all over it. Then use the different colors you’ve made to layer in bottles.
This is a fun blog, and a great idea! I’ll be coming back!
They look great! We love sand art!
Wow! This is such an awesome idea. My kids were looking over my shoulder while I was reading this and they are begging to do it. We’re gonna have to head to Michaels’s this week and see what we can find.
I remember making these at the fair as a kid, but I also remember them being ridiculously expensive. I can’t wait to try this at home.

Cute and great idea
Oooh how pretty! I remember these from “summer holidays” and being able to buy them. Much prettier to make them yourself!

Thanks for the idea!
What kind of glue do you use to glue the bottoms shut?
I am thinking of having the kids do this for my 7 yr. old son’s birthday party. What do you think? I am really anxious to find a cool idea.
I used my hot glue gun. I use my hot glue gun for everything (seriously!) And I say go for it. it’s really fun and it wasn’t very messy (although we did ours in the garage just in case.)
