Some Days Just Don’t Go As Planned…

I sometimes have great plans in my head. Heck, who am I kidding. I always have great plans in my head. =o) But some days, things just don’t work out like they are supposed to.

The night before Easter my daughter complained of an itchy head.  Mind you, I work in a school so immediately I got grossed out.  I took her into the bathroom and turned on the very bright light (it was 8:30 and she was supposed to be asleep by now).  I started looking though her hair and holy heck!  Head lice.  Oh my golly.  I remained calm like every Mom would (while inside totally freaking out that there were bugs on my daughter’s head.)  But what do you do at 8:30 at night when your other child is sleeping?  So I put her to bed and then proceeded to freak out for the entire night.

Easter morning we woke up (I was already awake since I didn’t sleep a single minute!) and we did our Easter thing (eggs, baskets, etc.)  Then, like every family across America… I said to my kids “now let’s get dressed because we’re going to Urgent Care so someone can look through Mommy’s hair.”  Oh yeah, happy Easter to us.

Yep, lice.  When the Doc told me that my daughter had lice I though “oh man.”  But when she said that I did too… well, of course I burst into tears.  What in the heck.  But I shower!  Lice doesn’t discriminate you know.

So our day went like this…. shower, shampoo hair, comb hair, pick nits, start laundry, think !@#$% this and go to the laundry mat so I can do huge loads of laundry at a time.  At 6pm we were finally done at the laundromat (mind you it cost me $55 just to do the stinkin’ laundry!)  We were driving back home and the thought of having to vacuum the entire house, spray beds, couches, etc. and still wash all the clothes about made me barf.  Then my sweet daughter said to me “Mom, we haven’t eaten.  Can we have some dinner when we get home?”  Well, crud.  I suck.

So… when life gives you lemons… we got home, threw the laundry in the garage, went through the McDonalds drive thru and checked into a hotel.  The kids said it was a pretty good day.  I thought it sucked.  I guess it’s all about perspective, isn’t it?

The next day we drove home, dreading what waited for us.  We did laundry and vacuumed and sprayed and all the other get rid of lice things you’re supposed to do.  Then out of the corner of my eye I spot something move in the backyard.  “Oh great” I thought, “now what?”  I look and holy smokes, there’s a bunny in our backyard.  A BUNNY!  I quickly called for my kids.

This is how we spent our evening.  At the dinner table my daughter said “best day ever, Mom.”  I guess it really is in how you look at it.  It was an adventure!

  1. ugh, that is such a bummer about the lice. I got all itchy just reading about it.

But how neat about the bunny. Looks like he/she was someone’s pet with the fact that it let the kids come right up to it. What a great end to your day!

  2. That beautiful bunny turned your lemons into lemonade for you all, I guess. Lice are no respecters of persons … in fact, I believe they like clean hair! I’m not sure that is any consolation to you, but it always consoled me when my two little dears came home with itchy heads 🙂 Can’t believe you spent $55 at the laundromat!?!? Hope your week improves from now on. Elizabeth x

  3. You had one heck of an Easter, Erin. So sorry that it was so stressful. But what a sweet way to end the day. Your bunny picture is adorable and what a fun experience for the kids. How cute that Cody could even feed the little guy.

  4. oh you poor thing! I would be in tears just at the thought of it.

  5. Isn’t it wonderful that what was a stressful event will end up as a happy memory for your kids! Way to go mom! Bet your house is clean too!

  6. AWESOME ending! hope you are all better now!

  7. oh my goodness! what a weekend! Good thing we have kiddos to help us keep things in perspective, no?

  8. I can sympathize with the lice, sorry for your experience. The bunny is precious.

Can I give you a laugh? I found out my kids had brought home lice (years ago) when I was getting a hair cut! Thing was, the guy wouldn’t finish! I got 1/2 a hair cut!! That was when my now 24 yr on and 21 yr old were in preschool! Oh, the joys of lice!

    Happy Easter a little late
    Carrie

  9. Sorry you had a bad day. Life is like that sometimes.
We greeted Easter with a round of the stomach flu. We may never be able to eat Honey baked ham, spinach salad and twice baked potatoes again. We are are still queasy!

  10. I have a friend who has a successful business dealing with head lice! I help her out from time to time. Quit fretting over it! It is a nuisance, I know, but not a serious health issue. It sounds to me like you have done way more than you really needed to in order to get rid of it. So you should be fine. Just be SURE to repeat your treatment (shampoo, or whatever you used to kill them) again after a week has passed. That will get any bugs that managed to hatch before they mature enough to repeat the cycle. Don’t feel bad about it or anything. Like you said, lice don’t discriminate.

  11. Eeew. That makes me squirm. So sorry! I’m glad your kids didn’t think it ruined the day – that means you handled it like a champ! 🙂 I read somewhere recently that they like clean hair, too. So who’s not stressing about bathing her kids more often? This mom! hahaha

  12. Here’s to a better week, it can only get better right?
    🙂 mickey

  13. I feel your pain. I had head lice twice when I was a kid. It’s not so bad when boys have it…you can always shave their hair, but women…ugh! Hopefully they are gone for good.

  14. Oh my word! Glad you aced it with the kids, sorry it was not the most pleasant for you though! My kids had lice one time, and my mom came to help me…she wound up getting lice too. I felt sooo bad! I don’t think I would ever ask someone for help in that situation again! lol

  15. It will be the Easter you never forget!

  16. A Easter store to behold Erin. sorry to read of your Day. Been there…25 years ago. I remember bagging stuffed animals, freezing pillows, and just generally freaking too! Both my daughters are school teachers…they try to wear pony tails alot LOL! It happens!

  17. Booooo for lice! Hooray for bunnies! Glad your story had a happy ending:)

  18. You surely made lemonade out of lemons and a big batch! Way to take a crazy unseen day and make incredible memories!!
