Sand Art

Sand Art. We’ve all seen it. We all love it. But have we ever “made” it? Not this family. So we thought we’d give it a try. There are lots of kits out there at various craft stores. They include a bottle and some sand. But they are around $10 or more and don’t have very much stuff in the box. It’s much cheaper to just buy the things individually. (At least for us it was!)

You can make your own colored sand. It’s really easy. You take “regular” colored sand and put it in a jar or container. Add some food coloring and shake the heck out of it. Pour it onto newspaper or paper towels and let it dry. Pretty easy right?

Or you can go buy it. It’s not very expensive and it’s at most craft stores.

Cool colors, right?

We bought these great bottles from Michaels Crafts. They were $3.99 for 6 bottles. There is a cork on the top and the bottom comes off (so you can put a message in it.) We glued the bottom shut so there wouldn’t be any accidental sand spills all over the house.

The kids all took turns pouring in the sand. The great thing about this activity is that there is no right or wrong to how much sand you add. You can add small layers or large ones. Everyone gets to create their own design.
(Don’t you just love how my daughter concentrates? Tongue out. I have lots and lots of pictures like this.) =o)

When the bottles are filled, let them sit for a little while. The sand will settle, which is good. You might want to carefully tap the bottle on a table to settle it even more. Why, you ask? Because you don’t want to have a space at the top of the bottle. If you do and you have little ones who tend to shake everything, the layers will get all mixed up. How do I know this? Well, the one who was concentrating so hard is a shaker. She now has a multi colored bottle of sand.
Pretty cool, huh?

Then we glued the lids on. Again, to prevent any spillage later on.
I saw these cool things at Michaels as well. They cost $1. Not too bad.
But look how cool they look!

Everyone was pretty pleased with their creations!

  6. Great kids craft! Thanks for sharing at It’s Party Time Thursday at PonyTails&FishScales!

  7. Awesome idea! Looks like so much fun. My daughter always loved sand art. I wish I had thought to make it at home. They also remind me of when I was a kid terrariums were a big fad. You would layer colored rocks or sand in the bottom of a glass bowl, put soil and then plant some plants in it. I had one that I loved:) You brought back happy memories of my terrarium..lol

  8. Those are just too cute!!!!! I’m going to the beach this weekend and I will have to pick up some sand!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  9. How fun! I remember we did something like this in school when I was little, but instead of sand we used salt. To color the salt, you spread it out on a washable, flat surface and rub colored sidewalk chalk all over it. Then use the different colors you’ve made to layer in bottles.

This is a fun blog, and a great idea! I’ll be coming back!

  10. They look great! We love sand art!

  11. Wow! This is such an awesome idea. My kids were looking over my shoulder while I was reading this and they are begging to do it. We’re gonna have to head to Michaels’s this week and see what we can find.

I remember making these at the fair as a kid, but I also remember them being ridiculously expensive. I can’t wait to try this at home.

  16. What kind of glue do you use to glue the bottoms shut?

  17. I am thinking of having the kids do this for my 7 yr. old son’s birthday party. What do you think? I am really anxious to find a cool idea.

  18. I used my hot glue gun. I use my hot glue gun for everything (seriously!) And I say go for it. it’s really fun and it wasn’t very messy (although we did ours in the garage just in case.)
